After careful consideration, LULAC Ottumwa has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s VIVA Ottumwa Latino Festival. The organization cited concerns for the community’s safety and well-being during a time of ongoing uncertainty that continues to affect both documented and undocumented residents alike.
“We believe it’s our responsibility to act with care and prioritize the peace of mind of those we serve,” LULAC stated in its official release. While there will be no in-person festival this year, the group reaffirmed its commitment to the community through scholarships, youth leadership programs, and educational initiatives that empower people from all backgrounds.
For many of us, VIVA Ottumwa is more than a festival — it’s a celebration of culture, diversity, and collective progress. Last year, we had the honor of participating in this incredible event, which brought together people of all nationalities to enjoy music, food, and shared traditions. It was also a major boost for Ottumwa’s local economy, energizing small businesses and creating opportunities for cultural exchange.
We remember the 2024 festival as a vibrant reminder of what’s possible when a community stands united. While we won’t gather in the same way this year, the spirit of VIVA Ottumwa lives on — in our actions, our partnerships, and our shared mission to build a stronger Ottumwa for all.
